NDMA Alerts Heavy Rainfall in Northern Pakistan Starting Tuesday

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a warning about an active weather system expected to bring heavy rainfall to the upper regions of Pakistan beginning Tuesday.

Significant downpours are forecasted for Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), Gilgit-Baltistan, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and northeastern Punjab. Additionally, torrential rains are likely in Islamabad, the Pothohar plateau, northern Balochistan, as well as AJK and Gilgit-Baltistan.

This weather pattern is anticipated to cause heavy precipitation in the upper catchment areas of major rivers including the Indus, Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, and Sutlej. Consequently, a slight rise in water inflows is expected at the Tarbela and Mangla dams, along with a modest increase in the flow of these rivers.

In a significant development, the NDMA emphasized that despite these increases, there is no immediate risk of widespread riverine flooding across the country. However, localized flash flooding remains a concern, particularly in hill torrents, streams, and low-lying urban zones.

Residents of vulnerable urban centers have been urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions against potential waterlogging. Furthermore, travelers and local communities in AJK, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are advised to exercise heightened caution during the upcoming days due to the expected adverse weather conditions.
