Powderfinger announce 18-date comeback tour after 17 years

Powderfinger, one of Australia’s best-loved rock bands, has unveiled details of a comeback tour, 17 years after the group broke up. The Brisbane-based band, which confirmed its reunion last week, will open the tour with four nights in its home city next September.

After Brisbane, the band will play 14 more shows in Cairns, Sydney, Adelaide, Perth and Melbourne. All gigs will be staged in a “stadium sized big-top” tent. The shows will take place only on Friday and Saturday nights, a schedule similar to the one Oasis used on its world tour last year. No gigs outside Australia have been announced yet.

Band says the timing finally feels right

In a statement on Monday, the band said it was “absolutely ecstatic” to be getting back together to play. It said fans had long urged it to return to the road, but “until now, it never felt quite right or lined up for all of us.”

The members thanked long-term supporters and said they had picked up new fans who had never seen them perform. They also said their music is linked to people’s “most treasured and joyous memories”, and they hope to share that joy with some of Australia’s best established and upcoming talent.

Albums and hits from a seven-album career

Powderfinger released seven studio albums during its career. Its 2000 album Odyssey Number Five was voted the best Australian album of all time by listeners of Triple J, the music station of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), in 2011.

The station also named the single My Happiness the sixth best Australian song of all time in 2025. The group’s other hits include On My Mind and These Days and Sunsets.

Since the band split, frontman Bernard Fanning has pursued a solo career. Bassist John Collins has gone on to open two of Brisbane’s largest live music venues.
