The Last of Us Season 3: Kaitlyn Dever Takes Lead as Abby

Filming for the third season of The Last of Us commenced in March 2026, marking a significant shift as Kaitlyn Dever steps into the lead role of Abby. This transition promises to bring new emotional layers and narrative perspectives to the series, which has sparked much discussion among fans since the game’s release.

Dever, who previously held a supporting role, was informed of her expanded part during season 2, giving her several months to prepare both mentally and physically for the demands of leading the show. The creators of the series have confirmed that season 3 will closely follow Abby’s viewpoint, aligning with the narrative style of The Last of Us Part II game.

Production resumed in April 2026 in Vancouver, with set photos revealing scenes shot in Gastown, a location chosen to replicate the game’s Seattle setting. The ambitious nine-month shooting schedule reflects the scale of the project, with creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann assembling a strong ensemble cast to enrich Abby’s story.

Among the notable new cast members are Patrick Wilson, portraying Jerry, Abby’s father, and Jason Ritter in a yet-to-be-disclosed role. The siblings Lev and Yara, played by Kyriana Kratter and Michelle Mao respectively, were cast in March 2026 to depict characters whose paths intersect with Abby at critical points. Returning cast includes Bella Ramsey as Ellie, Gabriel Luna as Tommy, and Isabela Merced as Dina, reprising their established roles.

The decision to center season 3 around Abby is both bold and faithful to the source material. Mazin and Druckmann acknowledged that the game’s most divisive section stems from experiencing the story through Abby’s eyes, exploring her survival and humanity. HBO aims to portray this narrative with nuance, highlighting the moral complexities of her journey.

Kaitlyn Dever’s interpretation of Abby emphasizes emotional depth over physicality, offering a fresh take that may resonate with fans who found the game’s narrative challenging. Themes of trauma, loyalty, and redemption are expected to be explored through new storytelling choices.

Scheduled for a 2027 premiere, the series allows ample time for post-production refinement and marketing efforts. While it remains uncertain whether the show will follow the game’s exact storyline or take creative liberties, early indications suggest the writers will honor Abby’s arc while potentially expanding or reimagining key moments for television audiences.

Season 3 represents a pivotal moment in how The Last of Us adapts the narrative of Part II. The focus is not only on Abby commanding respect but also on delving deeply into her motivations, relationships, and survival in a post-apocalyptic world.
