The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has asked the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to raise electricity tariffs by Rs2.56 per unit. The request falls under the monthly fuel price adjustment for September.
The agency said the increase would recover extra fuel costs incurred during the month from power consumers. NEPRA will hold a public hearing on October 29 before deciding on the request for the September billing month.
Fuel costs rose well above estimates in September
The CPPA said the average fuel cost per unit had been estimated at Rs7.46 for September, but it rose to Rs10.02. The total fuel cost of electricity generation reached Rs127.87 billion during the month, according to the agency.
How generation spending was split across fuel sources
According to the application, spending for the month broke down as follows:
- Local coal: Rs7.95 billion
- Imported coal: Rs37.14 billion
- Diesel: Rs13.26 billion
- Furnace oil: Rs11.81 billion
- Local gas: Rs13.89 billion
- Liquefied natural gas (LNG): Rs31.93 billion
The distribution companies (DISCOs) sold 12.76 billion units of electricity during the month, the application stated. NEPRA will weigh the proposal against the application and input from relevant stakeholders before ruling.
