SBP Proposes Phasing Out Rs10 Note to Modernize Currency System

The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has put forward a recommendation to discontinue the Rs10 banknote as part of efforts to modernize the country’s currency system. This move aims to streamline cash circulation and potentially replace the note with more durable and cost-effective alternatives such as coins. The deputy governor highlighted that phasing out the Rs10 note could reduce printing expenses and enhance the overall efficiency of currency management.

Historically, the Rs10 note has been a common denomination in Pakistan’s currency system, widely used in daily transactions. However, many countries have transitioned to coins for lower denominations due to their longer lifespan and reduced replacement costs. The SBP’s proposal aligns with global trends where central banks seek to optimize currency production and circulation to better serve the economy.

In a significant development, if implemented, this recommendation could impact consumers and businesses by changing how small-value transactions are handled. The shift may also encourage the public to adapt to new currency formats, potentially improving transactional convenience and reducing wear and tear on physical currency. Meanwhile, the SBP continues to explore other measures to enhance Pakistan’s financial infrastructure and currency management strategies.
