Asian Markets Tumble, $1.5 Trillion Lost Amid Global Stock Sell-Off

Equity markets across Asia experienced a severe downturn on Monday, with investor wealth declining by approximately $1.5 trillion in a single trading session. This synchronized sell-off was driven by a sharp decline in the technology sector on Wall Street, persistent inflation concerns in the United States, and escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East that rattled global financial centers.

From Tokyo to Mumbai, panic gripped trading floors as major stock indices dropped sharply within minutes of the market opening. Analysts characterized the plunge as a significant unwinding of highly leveraged positions, forcing exchanges in the region to respond swiftly as investors rapidly withdrew funds from some of the year’s top-performing technology stocks.

The primary trigger originated in the US, where a steep correction in artificial intelligence and semiconductor stocks over the weekend spilled over into Asian technology markets. Following disappointing earnings guidance from US chipmaker Broadcom on Friday, tech-heavy indices in Taiwan and South Korea suffered the most intense losses. South Korea’s KOSPI index led the regional decline with a 5 percent drop, marking a 13 percent fall from its record peak reached just last week.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 index fell nearly 4 percent, with companies involved in the computer-chip supply chain experiencing the largest declines. Taiwan’s main index also dropped by 3.9 percent. Market experts noted that Asian technology stocks, having been among the strongest performers globally this year, became prime targets for institutional investors seeking to secure profits and raise cash amid deteriorating market sentiment.

Adding to the turmoil were macroeconomic challenges from the US, where a robust jobs report dashed expectations for imminent interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve. This heightened concerns about an overheating economy, supporting a stronger US dollar and pushing Treasury yields higher. The resulting capital outflows from emerging markets put significant pressure on India’s benchmark Nifty 50, causing substantial losses for domestic investors measured in trillions of rupees.

Meanwhile, geopolitical tensions intensified as Brent crude oil prices surged 3.5 percent to $96.45 per barrel. This increase followed reports of Israeli military strikes on targets in western and central Iran over the weekend, overshadowing OPEC+’s recent agreement to raise oil production targets.

With key US consumer price inflation data scheduled for release on Wednesday and a major initial public offering from SpaceX expected to absorb liquidity later this week, market watchers caution that Asian equities may continue to face heightened volatility in the near term.
