Fuel Prices Rise: Breakdown of Taxes Per Litre in Pakistan

Recent disclosures have highlighted the substantial tax component embedded within fuel prices across Pakistan, revealing that government levies and duties account for a significant share of petrol and diesel costs.

Details from the Ministry of Energy indicate that taxes constitute nearly 32 percent of petrol prices, equating to Rs 129.72 per litre. This figure includes Rs 23.72 as customs duty, Rs 103.50 under the petroleum levy, and Rs 2.50 for the climate support levy.

In the case of high-speed diesel, taxes represent about 21 percent of the total price, amounting to Rs 82.81 per litre. The tax breakdown comprises Rs 51.62 in customs duty, Rs 28.69 in petroleum levy, and Rs 2.50 in climate-related charges.

Meanwhile, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) has implemented further fuel price changes. The cost of light diesel has been raised by Rs 17.30 per litre, setting the new price at Rs 287.54. Conversely, kerosene prices have been lowered by Rs 4.45 per litre, now priced at Rs 360.76.

These latest revisions follow a government decision the previous day to increase petrol and high-speed diesel prices, intensifying the financial strain on consumers already grappling with rising living expenses.
