Activists say sending two more Uyghurs from Thailand to China would seriously endanger them. They fear Bangkok may give in to pressure from Beijing, even though reports describe torture and rights abuses against the mostly Muslim ethnic minority.
One of the men said he would be “like a slave” if he were returned to China. Last year, Thai authorities removed 40 Uyghur men to China by force, despite appeals from the men themselves and from the United Nations.
The US and Canada had reportedly offered to resettle the men, but Bangkok seemed keen not to anger Beijing. The UN has said the whereabouts of those sent back remain unknown.
