A truck ran into a youth soccer game in Wichita, Kansas, on Saturday, killing a six-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man, according to police. Ten other people were taken to hospital with traumatic injuries.
Wichita police Captain Aaron Moses told a news conference that the injuries ranged from minor to severe, though none appear to be life threatening. Both people who died were pronounced dead at the scene.
Driver in custody as investigators work on motive
Moses said a 34-year-old woman was driving the vehicle, which came to rest in a field at the western end of the Stryker Sports Complex. She has been cooperating with investigators. Asked whether she had been arrested, he said only that she was in custody.
Wichita police Chief Joe Sullivan said the basic sequence was clear but the reasons were not. “We know what happened, but now we’re working very hard to find out why it happened, and we’re not there yet,” he said.
Who was hurt and who was in the truck
Police said the injured included two youths aged five, two aged eight, a nine-year-old and five adults. One more adult was hospitalized for non-traumatic medical issues.
Moses said the driver’s child was playing soccer at the complex, though not on the field where the crash happened. The truck carried two juveniles as passengers.
