Katie Zacharia is leaving her role as White House press secretary, one week after United States President Donald Trump selected her for the post. Her exit was confirmed, with the move described as her “transitioning out” of the position.
Earlier on Friday, Trump told reporters he had urged Zacharia to “reconsider” staying in the job. “I don’t think Katie should be made to suffer like she’s suffering at the hands of the press,” he said as he left the White House.
Questions over Zacharia’s bar exam status
Trump had announced her appointment and described her as an attorney. Over the past week, however, scrutiny grew over whether Zacharia, a graduate of California’s Pepperdine University law school, had passed the bar exam. In an interview with Fox News on Thursday, she said she had not passed it.
Zacharia said she had received a call about the role last week. She succeeded Karoline Leavitt.
How her brief tenure compares with Scaramucci’s
Zacharia lasted five days in the job, half the length of Anthony Scaramucci’s time as director of communications. Scaramucci served 10 days during Trump’s first administration.
