A Washington-area residence belonging to Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar, a sharp critic of President Donald Trump, was searched by US agents as part of a continuing criminal case. Homeland Security Investigations personnel conducted the early-Monday search, according to two people briefed on the matter.
The Justice Department said a judge had approved a search warrant that was executed in the capital, but it neither named Omar nor shared details of the inquiry.
Alleged immigration fraud and Omar’s denial
Unnamed sources told a cable network that the probe concerns suspected immigration fraud linked to paperwork her late father submitted when she was a child. Omar has previously denied such claims, and no charges have been announced.
Vice President JD Vance had earlier accused Omar of immigration fraud without offering evidence, saying the administration was studying how to investigate her.
Trump’s attacks and the November midterms
The Somali-born congresswoman represents a Minnesota district that includes Minneapolis, and for a long time she has faced political attacks from Trump, particularly over immigration. Omar has called the allegations politically motivated.
Only a little more than three weeks separate the search from the November 3 midterm vote, in which Republicans hope to hold on to control of Congress.
