A man has died following an attack by a tiger at Yorkshire Wildlife Park, near Doncaster in northern England, police have said. Officers and emergency medical staff were sent to the park at about 1:35pm on Saturday, which is 12:35 GMT, after reports that a man had gone into the tiger enclosure. He died at the scene.
Police respond to fatal tiger attack in Doncaster park
It is not yet clear how the man got into the enclosure. Police said the tiger was not hurt and remained inside its enclosure, and that there was no wider danger to the public. The park was emptied, and officers stayed on site through Saturday night.
Police said the man’s family had been informed and was receiving support from specialist officers. Officers also said they were aware of footage circulating on social media that appeared to show the man inside the enclosure shortly before the attack. They urged people not to share the upsetting clip.
Park closed while authorities establish what happened
The park said it had shut following a serious incident involving the tiger enclosure, and it would stay closed until Sunday. It said it was working closely with the authorities to establish exactly what took place. The park added that the safety of its visitors, staff and animals remained its top priority.
Land of the Tigers attraction at the park
Yorkshire Wildlife Park began operating in 2009. Its Land of the Tigers attraction, which opened in 2011, is a purpose-built reserve of 0.4 hectares (2 acres) for endangered Amur tigers, also known as Siberian tigers. A raised walkway measuring 300 metres (985 feet) allows visitors to watch the animals roam through woodland and grassland and play in a waterfall pool, the park said.
