Cristiano Ronaldo suspended over Portugal squad walkout

Cristiano Ronaldo has been provisionally suspended by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), which on Saturday opened disciplinary proceedings against the 41-year-old over his decision to leave the national squad.

The federation said the case is classed as urgent and that Ronaldo will remain suspended until a final punishment is decided. Earlier this week, he apologised to supporters, criticised coach Jorge Jesus and said he would accept whatever penalty was imposed.

How the dispute with Portugal’s squad unfolded

The row built up during Portugal’s Nations League fixtures. Ronaldo was told to warm up as a substitute against Norway on September 27, but he was never sent on. He then found out he would not start against Denmark on October 1, prompting his exit from the squad.

Ronaldo’s response and claims against Jesus

On Tuesday, Ronaldo accused Jesus of failing to keep a promise about giving him playing time in Nations League matches. He added that he had no plans to retire from international football and would be available once any punishment was served.

Portugal’s Nations League run and Ronaldo’s club form

Portugal won all four of their Nations League matches and reached the quarter-finals with two fixtures to spare. The ex-Real Madrid and Manchester United forward remains the country’s all-time leading scorer and most-capped player.

Ronaldo returned to club action on Friday for Saudi side Al-Nassr, scoring in their 3-0 Saudi Pro League win over Diriyah.
