Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja has left for South Korea on an official visit to take part in the Global AI and Digital Summit. Pakistan is set to become the first country to sign the Digital and AI Compact.
At the summit, the minister will attend a ministerial meeting on artificial intelligence (AI) and digital inclusion in Pakistan. She is expected to present the country’s future roadmap during a dedicated session.
Scheduled meetings with Google and World Bank officials
Khawaja is scheduled to meet a Google vice president to discuss digital technology and artificial intelligence. Separate bilateral talks are also planned with a vice president of the World Bank.
During the visit, she will also share Pakistan’s perspective on expanding internet access and ensuring that digital services are available to the public.
Pakistan’s AI policy and existing regulatory measures
Earlier, Khawaja said Pakistan’s AI policy had been formulated comprehensively after consultations. Speaking at an event in Islamabad, she said the government would focus on its implementation and execution.
She stressed that the country must embrace technology to move forward on the path of progress and development. She also acknowledged that Pakistan currently has no AI-specific regulatory structure.
Instead, the ministry’s initiatives, including laws, rules and policies, aim to address potential challenges linked to AI use. These include the National Cyber Security Policy 2021, the Pakistan Cloud First Policy 2022, the CERT Rules 2023, and sectoral regulations such as the Critical Telecom Data and Infrastructure Security Regulation (CTDISR).
