WhatsApp Adopts Android’s Native Bubbles for Enhanced Chat Multitasking

WhatsApp is preparing to enhance the multitasking experience for its Android users by integrating support for Android’s native notification bubbles. This upcoming feature aims to provide a more cohesive alternative to Meta’s older “Chat Heads” system, which has been a staple of Facebook Messenger for years.

Floating chat heads, popularized by Facebook Messenger, allow users to quickly access conversations via circular profile icons that hover over other apps. While convenient for some, this feature has faced criticism for creating clutter and inconsistent behavior across different devices.

In a significant development, WhatsApp is shifting towards a more streamlined approach. Early beta versions reveal that the app is adopting Android’s built-in notification bubbles, which offer a system-integrated experience rather than relying on a separate, app-specific overlay. This change promises a cleaner and more uniform interface for managing conversations.

Unlike Messenger’s semi-custom implementation, which varies depending on the device, WhatsApp’s use of Android’s native bubbles embraces Google’s standardized system. This means chats will appear as floating bubbles that seamlessly overlay other apps, maintaining consistency across the Android platform.

This move is notable as Android continues to refine its bubble feature, enabling any compatible app to utilize it without fragmentation. WhatsApp’s adoption signals a broader trend toward a unified messaging experience, reducing confusion caused by multiple messaging apps implementing similar features in different ways.

Looking ahead, the feature will allow users to switch between conversations without leaving their current activity, whether browsing, watching videos, or working. Chats will float as resizable bubbles on the screen, making multitasking smoother and less disruptive.

Although WhatsApp has not announced an official release date, the presence of this feature in beta testing indicates it could be launched soon. With Android’s ongoing efforts to enhance notification bubbles as a core system capability, wider availability is expected in future updates.

For now, this development points to a more refined messaging experience on Android, where conversations stay accessible without overwhelming the user’s screen.
