US Lawmakers Demand FIFA Address Soaring Ticket Prices for 2026 World Cup

WASHINGTON – FIFA is currently facing mounting criticism from a significant number of US lawmakers over the escalating prices of tickets for the upcoming 2026 World Cup. In a collective move, 69 members of the United States Congress have formally called on the international soccer governing body to take swift and effective measures aimed at making the tournament more affordable and accessible for fans across the globe.

The letter, led by Representative Sydney Kamlager-Dove, strongly condemned FIFA’s recent introduction of dynamic pricing—a pricing strategy that adjusts ticket costs based on factors such as demand, remaining inventory, and the popularity of specific matches. This marks the first time such a system is being applied to World Cup tickets, and critics argue that it has transformed what is traditionally a celebration of sport into a commercial venture prioritizing profit over the fan experience.

In their message to FIFA President Gianni Infantino, the lawmakers emphasized that the overwhelming enthusiasm and demand for World Cup tickets should not serve as justification for excessive price hikes that effectively exclude many loyal supporters. They stressed that the tournament’s global appeal is built on the passion of its fans, who deserve fair access rather than being priced out of attending the matches.

Reports indicate that ticket prices on FIFA’s official resale platform for games hosted in the United States, Canada, and Mexico have surged dramatically, far exceeding the initial price ranges outlined in the original bid documents submitted by the host countries. Although FIFA has made a limited number of tickets available at $60, this gesture has been widely criticized as insufficient to counterbalance the broader trend of inflated costs that place a heavy financial burden on ordinary fans.

The congressional letter urges FIFA to take several concrete steps to address these concerns. Among the recommendations are reallocating unassigned ticket categories at more reasonable prices, implementing measures to prevent further price inflation as teams progress through the tournament stages, reconsidering the use of dynamic pricing in future World Cups, and granting host cities greater autonomy to organize fan festivals and community events for those unable to secure match tickets.

Highlighting the cooperation of host cities in bringing to life what is expected to be the largest and most globally inclusive World Cup in history, the lawmakers warned that the consequences of dynamic pricing risk making the 2026 tournament the most financially exclusive edition to date. They expressed concern that such barriers could undermine the spirit of unity and celebration that the World Cup traditionally fosters among diverse populations worldwide.

As of now, FIFA has not issued a public response to the congressional appeal, leaving fans, local organizers, and stakeholders anxiously awaiting clarity on how the organization plans to address these pressing issues. With the tournament kickoff scheduled for June 11, the pressure is mounting for FIFA to demonstrate a commitment to balancing commercial interests with the needs and expectations of its global fan base.

This intervention by US lawmakers underscores a growing unease that, despite the World Cup’s status as a premier international sporting event, the increasing commercialization and ticket price inflation could alienate the very supporters who have been instrumental in building its worldwide popularity over many decades. The coming weeks will be critical in determining whether FIFA can reconcile these competing demands and preserve the tournament’s inclusive and celebratory nature.
