Portugal’s football federation has banned Cristiano Ronaldo for 30 days and imposed a fine of 255 euros after he left the national team’s camp following a falling out with coach Jorge Jesus. The penalties were issued by the federation’s Disciplinary Council.
The sanctions follow Ronaldo’s departure from the camp about three weeks ago. Reports said he left the team’s base in Copenhagen before a Nations League game against Denmark this month, after being named among the substitutes for a match against Norway instead of starting.
Disciplinary Council cites breach of conduct code
The Disciplinary Council said Ronaldo willfully broke the code of conduct. The report on the incident surfaced two days before proceedings opened on October 9.
Ronaldo had claimed that Jesus broke his word twice. The coach did not rule out Ronaldo rejoining the squad after Portugal’s 2-1 win, but denied that any such arrangement existed.
Unclear scope of ban and Ronaldo’s stance
The federation’s announcement did not specify which games or activities the ban covers, or whether time already served under the interim suspension will count. Ronaldo has expressed regret for leaving without his teammates and for failing to greet fans during the Norway game. He said he will be available for the national team once his suspension ends.
Pedro Proença, head of the federation, said everyone in the organisation wants Ronaldo back in the squad once the matter is settled.
