Brentford have said they are working with police to track down the people behind an incident in which a rugby ball was launched from a rooftop towards their Gtech Community Stadium. The club said the object was thrown during Saturday’s Premier League loss to Liverpool, which it announced on Monday.
A viral social media video shows a man kicking the ball from a nearby roof, where it seems to strike the edge before dropping. A second clip shows stadium staff picking it up and carrying it away.
Club condemns rooftop kick and pledges support for inquiry
In a statement, Brentford said the club was aware of an object being kicked from height onto the field of play. It described such conduct as dangerous and potentially very harmful, and said the matter had been passed to police, who could bring criminal charges.
The club added that matchday safety for fans, staff, players and officials was its top priority, and that it would back all efforts to make sure action is taken.
Defeat and league position after Liverpool match
Brentford lost 2-1 to Liverpool after giving up a first-half lead and finishing the game with nine men. The stadium is surrounded by homes and businesses.
The club sits sixth in the Premier League table with 10 points from seven matches. It next travels to Hull City on Sunday.
