Mahela Jayawardene has stepped down as head coach of the Indian Premier League team Mumbai Indians, the franchise said on Saturday.
The 49-year-old had previously coached the side during his first spell from 2017 to 2022, when he guided them to three titles. The former Sri Lanka captain returned in 2024, but the team could not repeat that success.
Mumbai Indians slide under Jayawardene’s second spell
Mumbai Indians finished fourth in 2025 and lost in the playoffs. In 2026, they ended the league second from bottom.
In a statement, Jayawardene said he was leaving with “immense pride in what we have achieved together”. He added that he would always hold a special place in his heart for the franchise and wished the team every success.
