Marquez takes MotoGP championship lead with Indonesia sprint win

Marc Marquez moved to the top of the MotoGP world championship after winning a dramatic sprint race in Indonesia on Saturday. The Spanish rider finished first in the 13-lap sprint at the Mandalika International Circuit, overtaking fellow Spaniard Jorge Martin to lead the standings by four points.

Marquez wins Indonesia sprint amid chaotic start

The race began with a collision between pole-sitter Raul Fernandez and Marco Bezzecchi at the first corner, causing both to crash out. Martin initially took the lead on his Aprilia, with Marquez close behind, both starting from the second row. Martin extended his lead to 1.5 seconds at the halfway point in hot, dry conditions.

However, Marquez then slowed unexpectedly, allowing Martin to maintain the lead briefly before Marquez regained the front, possibly due to tyre pressure issues affecting Martin. Marquez went on to secure his first win in Indonesia.

Race results and championship outlook

Japan’s Ai Ogura and Italy’s Fabio Di Giannantonio finished second and third respectively, while Martin ended the race in fourth place. With this result, Marquez now leads the championship by four points over Martin. The MotoGP season continues with five more race weekends, starting with Australia in two weeks.
