The Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) has brought back its town-level structure in Karachi, ending the district-based system that had operated since 2010. Under the revised arrangement, the authority has regrouped its administration around the city’s 25 towns.
According to the SBCA, the purpose is to upgrade building control, prevent unlawful construction and handle town-level matters openly. It also said the revised setup would help enforce building rules and resolve public complaints promptly.
Staffing and the 25 towns covered
Staff at director, deputy director and assistant director level, plus senior building inspectors, have been named to handle town-level affairs. The towns include Baldia, Chanesar, Gadap, Mominabad, Mauripur, Nazimabad, North Karachi, North Nazimabad, Orangi, Saddar, Safura, Shah Faisal, Sohrab Goth, Gulberg, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Ibrahim Hyderi, Jinnah, Korangi, Landhi, Liaquatabad, Lyari, Malir, Manghopir and Model Colony.
Earlier town system and 2010 shift to districts
The town model previously operated during the tenures of former Karachi nazims Naimatullah Khan and Mustafa Kamal, when the city had 18 towns. After Manzoor Qadir was appointed SBCA director general in 2010, the town system was discontinued in favour of a district-based structure.
