Dominiq Ponder, the backup quarterback for the University of Colorado football team, has tragically lost his life at the young age of 23 following a devastating car accident early Sunday morning. The university confirmed the heartbreaking news, which has sent shockwaves through the college football community and beyond.

The Colorado State Patrol reported that the fatal incident occurred around 3 a.m. on March 1 in Boulder County. While authorities initially withheld the identity of the victim, it was later confirmed that the man who died was indeed Ponder. Patrol Sergeant Ivan Alvarado detailed the circumstances, explaining that Ponder was driving a 2023 Tesla when he lost control while navigating a right-hand curve on Baseline Road near Newland Court.

the official account, the vehicle veered into the eastbound lanes, breached a guardrail, collided with an electrical pole, and subsequently rolled over at least once. Emergency responders pronounced Ponder dead at the scene, marking a tragic end to a promising young athlete’s life.

In the wake of this loss, Colorado’s head coach Deion Sanders took to social media to express his sorrow and offer condolences. Sanders described Ponder as one of his favorites, highlighting the young quarterback’s leadership qualities and the respect he commanded among teammates. “God please comfort the Ponder family, friends & loved ones,” Sanders wrote, emphasizing the deep impact Ponder had on those around him. He further remarked, “Lord you’re receiving a good one. Comfort us Lord comfort us,” underscoring the profound grief felt within the team.

Ponder’s journey in college football was marked by determination and resilience. He began his collegiate career at Bethune-Cookman in 2023, where he redshirted his first year. In 2024, he transferred to Colorado as a non-scholarship player and served as the fourth-string quarterback during the 2025 season. Though he saw limited action, appearing in two games, his presence on the team was valued. He was set to enter his junior year in the 2026 season, with hopes of further growth and contribution to the Buffaloes.

His teammates also mourned his passing deeply. Backup quarterback Colton Allen shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, recalling Ponder’s uplifting presence and the joy he brought to those around him. Allen’s words conveyed the heavy emotional toll of the loss, reflecting on the finality and pain of the tragedy. “Dom, you were a blessing to so many people,” Allen wrote, emphasizing the lasting impact of their shared experiences on and off the field.

Ponder was part of a group affectionately known as the “Florida boys,” recruited by Coach Sanders to Boulder. Before his college career, he played high school football at Carol City High School in Opa-locka, Florida, showcasing his talent and passion for the game. His transition from Florida to Colorado symbolized both his ambition and the close-knit bond he shared with his fellow recruits from the Sunshine State.

During the 2025 season, Ponder’s on-field statistics included one pass attempt and two carries for a net loss of four yards, with his playing time coming during the closing moments of Colorado’s 52-17 defeat to Arizona on November 1. Despite limited playing time, his teammates and coaches recognized his dedication and leadership qualities.

The timing of this tragedy is particularly poignant, occurring just one day before Colorado’s spring football practices were scheduled to begin on March 2. In response, the university’s athletic department has made counseling and support services available to student-athletes and staff to help them cope with this unimaginable loss. The community is rallying together to provide comfort and strength during this difficult period.

Rick George, the athletic director at Colorado, expressed the collective grief of the entire CU Athletics family in an official statement. He praised Ponder for embodying the core values of passion, enthusiasm, leadership, toughness, and intelligence—qualities that earned him the admiration of both teammates and coaches. George extended heartfelt sympathies to Ponder’s family and all those affected by his untimely passing, acknowledging the profound void left by his departure.
