In a landmark move towards sustainable urban transport, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif officially inaugurated Pakistan’s very first E-Taxi Scheme during a high-profile ceremony held in Lahore. The event marked a significant step in promoting eco-friendly mobility solutions across the province, as the government aims to reduce pollution and modernize public transportation.
During the launch, the Chief Minister personally handed over the keys to the initial batch of beneficiaries, which included both men and women selected for this pioneering initiative. Among the recipients were Naila Farhan, Kiran Khurshid, Qurat-ul-Ain, Abid Ali, and Azmat Mehmood. Maryam Nawaz took the opportunity to thoroughly inspect the electric vehicles, engaging with the drivers to understand the technical specifications and features of these modern taxis. This hands-on approach highlighted the government’s commitment to ensuring the scheme’s success and addressing any operational concerns from the outset.
In addition to the formal key distribution, the ceremony featured an interactive session where female beneficiaries shared their experiences and aspirations with the Chief Minister. This dialogue underscored the government’s emphasis on empowering women within the transport sector. A touching moment unfolded when a young girl named Asma Mehmood gifted the Chief Minister a portrait, receiving an autograph in return, symbolizing community support and enthusiasm for the project.
The E-Taxi Scheme’s first phase plans to deploy 1,100 electric vehicles across Punjab, signaling a major investment in green technology. Financially, the government is playing a substantial role by covering 50 percent of the down payment and the associated markup for male drivers. Female drivers benefit from even greater support, with the state covering 60 percent of their down payment. To promote gender inclusivity, the scheme reserves a 30 percent quota specifically for women, and electric taxis assigned to female drivers are distinguished by a unique color, making them easily identifiable on the roads.
Beyond the initial purchase, the government is also absorbing additional costs such as vehicle registration, fitness certification, and token tax, easing the financial burden on drivers. The payment structure is designed to be manageable, allowing beneficiaries to repay the remaining amount in affordable installments spread over five years. This approach aims to encourage widespread participation and long-term sustainability of the program.
Safety and convenience are key priorities within the scheme. Each e-taxi is equipped with a panic button directly connected to the Punjab Safe Cities Authority, ensuring rapid response in emergencies. The vehicles are integrated with popular ride-hailing platforms like inDrive and Yango, facilitating easy access for passengers and drivers alike. To support the electric fleet, fast-charging stations are being installed at strategic locations throughout the province, addressing one of the main challenges of electric vehicle adoption.
Moreover, the e-taxis come outfitted with modern amenities including onboard cameras for security, Wi-Fi connectivity, and charging ports for passengers’ devices. Digital payment options are also available, reflecting a push towards cashless transactions and enhancing the overall user experience. This comprehensive package not only modernizes the taxi industry but also aligns with global trends towards cleaner, smarter urban transportation.
