Pakistan Launches Production from First Horizontal Oil Well in Sindh

In a significant advancement amid the global energy crisis, Pakistan has achieved a major breakthrough in its energy sector with the commencement of production from its first horizontal oil well. The Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) has successfully brought into operation the well named ‘PASAKHI 13’, situated in the Hyderabad district of Sindh province.

The well is currently yielding approximately 460 barrels of oil per day. It was drilled to a total depth of 2,966 metres, which includes a 546-metre horizontal segment designed to optimize access to underground oil reserves. This innovative approach employs advanced technologies such as geo-steering and Electric Submersible Pump (ESP) systems to improve extraction efficiency.

Experts highlight that horizontal drilling can substantially enhance production rates compared to traditional vertical wells, with potential output increases of up to three times. This milestone has been achieved through the policy backing of the Special Investment Facility Council (SIFC), which has actively promoted the adoption of modern technology in the energy sector.

Notably, the rise in domestic oil production is expected to reduce Pakistan’s dependence on imported petroleum products, thereby alleviating pressure on foreign exchange reserves and strengthening energy security. Officials emphasize that the support and facilities provided by SIFC were instrumental in the successful completion of this project, setting a precedent for future horizontal drilling initiatives in the country.
