Eight people were hurt on Tuesday when a stabbing broke out at a supermarket in the South Korean city of Incheon, police said. One of the wounded suffered cardiac arrest, and officers detained a male suspect at the scene.
A police spokesperson said by phone that investigators are still working out what drove the attack and how it unfolded.
Incheon’s place in the Seoul metropolitan area
Incheon lies west of Seoul and is home to the country’s main airport. The city forms part of the wider Seoul metropolitan area.
Earlier stabbing attacks across South Korea
South Korea was unsettled by a string of stabbing rampages in 2023, some of which left several people dead or injured. In May, a man in his twenties fatally stabbed a 17-year-old girl and wounded another teenager in the southwestern city of Gwangju. A court later sentenced him to life in prison.
