Forty-one people were killed when a drone struck a displaced persons camp in Sudan’s Blue Nile region, near the Ethiopian border, a rights group said. The attack hit the Abu Shandi area.
Emergency Lawyers attributed the strike, which took place on Friday, to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group.
UN agency alarmed by civilian toll in camp attack
The UN Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs said it was appalled by distressing accounts. Early information indicated that most of those killed were women and children.
OCHA also said the area had come under relentless attack in recent weeks, forcing thousands of civilians to flee and placing many more at grave risk.
Army and RSF rivalry fuels one of world’s worst crises
Fighting between the Sudanese army and the RSF has continued since 2023, a struggle that has killed hundreds of thousands and forced more than 14 million people from their homes.
The conflict has left millions in need of medical care. The army holds most of central and eastern Sudan, while the RSF is based in western Darfur and controls parts of the south. Both sides have faced accusations of using drone attacks.
