The Saudi-led coalition in Yemen announced the launch of a wide-ranging military operation targeting Houthi fighters and their capabilities. The campaign comes as attacks on Saudi Arabia have intensified, prompting Riyadh to increase its efforts to counter the group.
In a statement on Friday, the coalition spokesperson said forces had destroyed 136 military targets in Houthi-controlled areas. The coalition is also providing continuous air support to Yemeni government forces engaged in the conflict.
Saudi military response to Houthi attacks
The operation follows a series of Houthi attacks on Saudi territory, including claims by the group that it targeted King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh. The Houthis have also warned that energy facilities could be future targets.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the attacks, describing them as terrorist acts that resulted in civilian casualties. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty and security under the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement.
In a post on X, PM Shehbaz praised the Saudi armed forces and the coalition for intercepting ballistic missiles and protecting civilians and critical infrastructure. He emphasized Pakistan’s “unwavering solidarity” with Saudi Arabia and its right to defend its people and vital assets.
Regional tensions and impact on infrastructure
The renewed fighting has increased pressure on Saudi Arabia, which has faced attacks on airports and other infrastructure. A commercial aircraft belonging to Saudi state carrier Saudia Airlines was heavily damaged by fire while parked near an airport terminal. Sources indicated that shrapnel from an intercepted projectile or another strike may have caused the damage. No passengers were believed to be aboard at the time, though injuries could not be ruled out.
The Saudi-led coalition supports Yemen’s internationally recognized government in its conflict with the Houthis, who control parts of the country. The conflict has raised concerns about broader regional involvement, with reports that Turkiye is preparing defensive and technical support for Saudi Arabia, while Syria is considering assistance options.
