The World Health Organization (WHO) has formally requested additional details from Russian authorities concerning the death of a laboratory worker at the Irkutsk Antiplague Research Institute. The cause of the worker’s illness and the specific pathogen that triggered public health interventions remain uncertain.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus noted that the organization has been monitoring the situation since initial media coverage. The worker passed away on October 2, 2026, after being hospitalized with severe pneumonia in the Irkutsk region. Early reports suggested the possibility of pneumonic plague following an alleged accidental laboratory exposure.

In response to WHO’s inquiry under the International Health Regulations, Russian health officials stated that no recent plague cases have been officially recorded in Irkutsk oblast. They confirmed that an epidemiological investigation was conducted and that preventive and control measures were implemented promptly.

Authorities reported that all identified contacts of the deceased were placed under medical observation and tested, with no detection of high-threat pathogens among them. The observation period for all contacts has now concluded.

The WHO has maintained communication with Russian officials and offered technical assistance. It has requested further clarification regarding the cause of the severe pneumonia, the pathogen responsible for the public health response, and reports of a second employee suffering from pneumonia of unknown origin.

Tedros emphasized the importance of timely, comprehensive, and transparent information sharing under the International Health Regulations. Such cooperation is vital to resolve conflicting accounts and enable an accurate evaluation of any potential public health risks.
