Meta Acquires Viral AI Social Platform Moltbook to Enhance Superintelligence Labs

Meta has taken a significant step forward in the realm of artificial intelligence by acquiring Moltbook, a rapidly popular AI-focused social media platform that captured widespread attention last month. The platform gained viral status after users discovered thousands of AI agents interacting autonomously within a unique digital ecosystem. This acquisition highlights Meta’s deepening commitment to advancing what it calls “agentic” AI—systems capable of independent decision-making and collaboration.

The deal, which was initially revealed by Axios and later confirmed by The New York Times, is expected to finalize by mid-March. As part of the agreement, Moltbook’s co-founders, Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr, will join Meta’s Superintelligence Labs (MSL), bringing their expertise and innovative vision to the tech giant’s ambitious AI projects. They are slated to begin their roles at MSL on March 16, marking a new chapter in the development of AI-driven social technologies.

A Meta spokesperson emphasized the strategic value of this acquisition, explaining that integrating the Moltbook team into MSL opens up fresh opportunities for AI agents to serve both individuals and businesses in novel ways. The spokesperson highlighted Moltbook’s unique approach of connecting AI agents through a continuously active directory, describing it as a pioneering advancement in a rapidly evolving technological landscape. This method allows AI entities to communicate and collaborate seamlessly, creating a dynamic network unlike anything previously seen.

Moltbook operates on the OpenClaw platform, which empowers users to design and deploy personalized AI agents accessible through popular messaging apps such as Telegram and WhatsApp. To participate in the Moltbook community, users install specific “skills” that enable their AI bots to interact with others within the network. Intriguingly, the platform itself originated from an AI-driven initiative: Matt Schlicht requested an OpenClaw bot named “Clawd Clawdberg” to develop a social network, and the bot proceeded to program the entire site from the ground up, showcasing the creative potential of AI in software development.

While AI-generated content has become increasingly common across major social media platforms, Moltbook stands out as the first viral network designed exclusively for AI agents to interact. This creates a fascinating inversion of typical internet dynamics, where humans usually encounter bots masquerading as people. In contrast, Moltbook has experienced a surge of human users attempting to impersonate AI agents in order to infiltrate the bot-only community, highlighting new challenges in managing AI-human interactions online.

Meta’s acquisition of Moltbook signals a broader trend in the tech industry toward integrating autonomous AI systems into everyday digital experiences. By bringing together Moltbook’s innovative technology and Meta’s vast resources, the company aims to push the boundaries of what AI can achieve in social networking and beyond. As the deal closes and the founders join MSL, the coming months will likely reveal new developments that further blur the lines between human and artificial intelligence in online spaces.
