Ahsan Iqbal calls for backing to revive Pakistan hockey

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Development, Planning and Special Projects Ahsan Iqbal has called for coordinated efforts to revive Pakistan’s hockey standing through youth development, stronger institutional backing and greater private sector involvement in sports.

He spoke at a signing ceremony that formalised a collaboration between Vital Group and the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF). The partnership aims to draw more young people into the sport and strengthen links with the national hockey squad.

Private sector role and support for players

Iqbal said Pakistan had enormous potential to regain its prominent place in world hockey, describing the sport as a symbol of the country’s identity. He said talented young athletes were being inspired to carry on the traditions of the nation’s heyday.

He stressed the value of private sector patronage, arguing that financially secure players free from economic pressure could devote their full energy to performance. A player’s main concern, he remarked, should be scoring the next goal rather than meeting personal expenses.

Sports science and the National Sports City

The minister said modern sport demanded more than talent and physical ability, pointing to the growing importance of sports science, technology and data-driven performance analysis. He said physical fitness, mental resilience, discipline and sustained concentration were essential for competing at the international level.

Referring to leading athletes worldwide, he said their success rested on consistent practice, discipline and an unwavering focus on performance.

Iqbal also highlighted the National Sports City in Narowal, which he said offered 14 sports with infrastructure meeting world standards in one place. He said the government was offering the national hockey team the chance to make the facility its permanent training base.

Hopes for rebuilding Pakistan’s hockey record

Iqbal described the Vital Group and PHF collaboration as a significant step towards strengthening the sport, encouraging youth participation and widening opportunities for the next generation of athletes.

He expressed optimism that Pakistan could rebuild its hockey history and regain its reputation in international contests through continued cooperation between sports organisations, the business sector and young talent.
