Daniil Medvedev beat Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets on Wednesday to reach the quarter-finals of the Shanghai Masters. The fifth-seeded Russian won 6-4, 7-5 and will now face either Tommy Paul or Zizou Bergs in the next round.
Medvedev did not face a single break point against the 28-year-old Greek. He said he felt he was playing very well and had put heavy pressure on his opponent in the first set. He broke serve to lead 6-5 in the second set and finished the match in one hour and 24 minutes.
Medvedev’s record against Tsitsipas
The pair met for the 16th time on the Tour. Medvedev, ranked sixth, improved his head-to-head record to 11 wins. He also won the Shanghai tournament in 2019.
Jodar reaches quarter-finals despite code violation
Rising Spanish star Rafael Jodar beat Botic van de Zandschulp 6-7 (4/7), 6-4, 6-2 earlier on Wednesday. He was handed a code violation in the second set for swearing in Spanish at a ball boy while asking for a towel. Jodar will play Casper Ruud, ranked 24th, in the quarter-finals.
Auger-Aliassime retires injured against Ruud
Ruud advanced when fourth-seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime retired injured while trailing 2-5 in the first set. Ruud said the trouble appeared to start in the fourth game of that set.
“It seemed to me that he maybe twisted his knee,” Ruud told reporters. “From that moment it seemed like he was in a lot of pain.”
Auger-Aliassime had needed a medical timeout after the fifth game and started the next one 1-4 down, with white strapping around his left knee.
