Club Brugge stunned Inter Milan 4–3 in the Champions League on Tuesday, with young forward Nicolo Tresoldi scoring the first three goals for the Belgian side.
Tresoldi, a 22-year-old Italian-German forward, was the standout performer of the night. Former Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer, who returned to the San Siro in the Brugge goal, also denied Lautaro Martinez after ten minutes.
Tresoldi’s hat-trick and Brugge’s early control
Tresoldi converted a penalty just before the half-hour, after Hakan Calhanoglu fouled Carlos Forbs. He added his second after taking advantage of a goalkeeping blunder by the Inter keeper just after the hour, then beat the Inter defence to the ball for his third with about a quarter of an hour left.
“It was an unbelievable and fantastic night. I dreamt many times of these nights and this was the best dream,” said Tresoldi.
Inter’s late comeback attempts fall short
Martinez gave Inter a lifeline just before the break, finishing a move started by Marcus Thuram and set up by a Federico Dimarco backheel. The Argentine reduced the deficit to 3–2 in the 81st minute, but Romeo Vernant restored the two-goal gap with a fourth goal in the 87th minute.
Ange-Yoan Bonny pulled a goal back for Inter after 93 minutes, but it was not enough. The reigning Italian champions and Serie A leaders remain on zero points after losing 2–1 to Real Madrid at the Bernabeu in their European opener, and they face immense pressure to win at home against Shakhtar Donetsk next week.
Brugge, who lost 3–2 at home to Aston Villa on matchday one, will host French club Lens next.
