Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham is entering the WNBA off-season as one of the league’s unrestricted free agents. Three days after the Fever’s first-round playoff loss to the Las Vegas Aces, her future with Indiana or another team remains undetermined, and her immediate schedule centres on time away from the court.
The Fever ended their campaign with a 94-83 loss to the Aces in Game 3. Even so, the team finished the regular season 28-16, the best regular-season record in franchise history, and regained a sense of chemistry around star teammate Caitlin Clark. Cunningham played the 2026 season on a one-year contract.
Cunningham reflects on the Fever’s season
In her No Hesitation podcast, Cunningham looked back on the campaign and praised how the team had developed. “It was so much fun and we were so good,” she said, adding that the squad “really do love each other.” She said the players hate losing and were competitive, and wanted a championship to go with their progress.
When asked about her free agency and future plans, Cunningham gave a noncommittal answer. “I don’t know what the offseason is gonna be like. I think a lot of guys are in free agency now, so who knows?” she said.
Front offices weigh roster decisions as Cunningham steps back
Several front offices, including Indiana general manager Amber Cox’s, are sorting through roster decisions for the coming season. Cunningham is taking a different approach for now. Rather than focusing on basketball, she is taking a breather and tending to her personal life.
The article describes her as dealing with the pressures of a hectic lifestyle, in which basketball has moved to a distant backseat.
