DSP injured as two Karachi police teams clash over suspects

Several police officials, including a deputy superintendent of police (DSP), were injured in Karachi after two police teams clashed over who would hold the suspects in a short-term kidnapping case, officials said. The scuffles reportedly continued through Tuesday night after a row broke out over the arrest and custody of the suspects.

How the custody dispute unfolded in Karachi

According to sources, the Karachi police chief had tasked the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) with arresting the suspects. Using locator information, a Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) team from the SIU carried out a raid in North Nazimabad and detained the suspects.

When the Station House Officer (SHO) of Shahrah-e-Noor Jahan police station reached the scene with his own team, he tried to take the suspects into custody. He argued that his station had already been handling the case and that the arrest fell under its jurisdiction. The SIU-CIA team, however, refused to hand them over, and a confrontation followed. Police from the local station were allegedly the ones who attacked SIU-CIA officials, which led to a physical fight.

DSP and head moharrir injured, then released

During the scuffle, a DSP and the head moharrir of Shahrah-e-Noor Jahan police station were hurt in a counter-altercation involving SIU personnel. The SIU-CIA team then took DSP Minhaj and the head moharrir into its custody. Both were freed after senior police officers stepped in and returned to their station.

Senior officers later worked to settle the dispute between the two units. The suspects were eventually handed over to Shahrah-e-Noor Jahan police station, officials said.

Police raid on PPP MNA’s brother’s home

In a separate incident, South District Police raided the residence of Azad Khan Jakhrani, brother of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) MNA Aijaz Hussain Jakhrani, in Khayaban-e-Rahat, DHA Phase VI, Karachi, on Wednesday. According to reports, officers met resistance during the operation, which led to a heated exchange between the SHO and the house’s security staff. Video footage reportedly shows Mumtaz Jakhrani trying to stop police from entering the house.

The police team left the premises after the confrontation with security personnel. The family alleged that the raid was carried out at the behest of MNA Aijaz Jakhrani.
