Arshad Nadeem Starts Commonwealth Games Javelin Qualifiers with 78.63m Throw

Pakistan’s Olympic gold medallist Arshad Nadeem commenced his Commonwealth Games 2026 javelin campaign with a throw of 78.63 meters in the qualification round. This distance falls short of his season-best performance as he aims to maintain his status among the world’s elite javelin throwers in a highly competitive field led by India’s Neeraj Chopra.

Pakistan has entered two athletes in the men’s javelin event, with Muhammad Yasir joining Nadeem. India has fielded a trio of competitors, including Rohit Yadav and Yash Vir Singh alongside Chopra. The lineup also features former Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott from Trinidad and Tobago, contributing to one of the most formidable javelin fields at this year’s Games.

In a significant development, the anticipated rivalry between Nadeem and Chopra is expected to be a highlight of the competition, drawing considerable attention on the Commonwealth stage. Their ongoing contest has become one of the most captivating narratives in international athletics.

The complete list of competitors in the men’s javelin throw includes Cameron McEntyre (Australia), Keyshawn Strachan (The Bahamas), Ben East (England), Anderson Peters (Grenada), Neeraj Chopra, Rohit Yadav, Yash Vir Singh (all India), Elvis Graham (Jamaica), Julius Yego (Kenya), Chinecherem Nnamdi (Nigeria), Arshad Nadeem and Muhammad Yasir (Pakistan), Lakona Gerega (Papua New Guinea), Douw Smit (South Africa), Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage and Sumedha Ranasinghe (both Sri Lanka), Keshorn Walcott (Trinidad and Tobago), and Usufono Eneli (Tuvalu).

Among the key contenders, Arshad Nadeem remains a major threat, with his duel against Chopra anticipated to be one of the tournament’s most closely followed events. Neeraj Chopra, the first Indian to surpass the 90-meter mark, enters as a top favourite, seeking to reclaim the Commonwealth title he last secured in 2018.

Other notable athletes include Anderson Peters of Grenada, a two-time world champion expected to contend strongly for medals, and Julius Yego from Kenya, a former world champion with significant experience on the big stage. Keshorn Walcott, the former Olympic champion from Trinidad and Tobago, further enhances the depth of this competitive field.
