The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has made a significant leadership change by naming Abu Bakar as the new captain of the national hockey team, replacing Imad Shakeel Butt. This decision comes as Pakistan gears up for the FIH Hockey World Cup.
PHF President Mohyuddin Ahmed Wani approved the appointment following a recommendation from the Professional Development Committee. While Abu Bakar will assume the captaincy, Imad Shakeel Butt will remain an integral part of the squad, contributing his experience as a senior player.
Abu Bakar is set to lead the team for the first time during Pakistan’s home series against South Korea, which kicks off on July 30. The federation expressed optimism that the combination of Abu Bakar’s leadership, seasoned players, and emerging young talent will strengthen the team’s unity and balance.
These changes come amid intensified preparations for the FIH Hockey World Cup, scheduled to start on August 15 in the Netherlands and Belgium. The tournament will feature sixteen teams divided into four groups, with Pakistan placed in Pool D alongside England, Wales, and their traditional rivals, India.
Notably, the highly anticipated Pakistan-India match is set for August 19, drawing significant attention ahead of the global event.
