Barcelona Strikers Struggle as Villarreal Visit Amid La Liga Title Race

Barcelona are set to host Villarreal this Saturday in a crucial La Liga fixture that could significantly influence the title race. The Catalan side currently holds the top spot in the league standings, but concerns are mounting over the inconsistent form of their main strikers, Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres. Both forwards have struggled to find their best rhythm this season, raising questions about Barcelona’s attacking potency as they look to consolidate their position at the summit.

Head coach Hansi Flick has been alternating between Lewandowski, the seasoned Polish striker, and the younger Spaniard Torres to lead the frontline. Despite this rotation strategy, neither player has managed to fully convince fans or critics alike with their performances. Lewandowski, who joined Barcelona after a storied career at Bayern Munich, has seen a noticeable decline in his output this season, compounded by fitness setbacks that have limited his impact on the pitch. Meanwhile, Torres, who is 25 years old, is on track to set a personal best for goals scored, but the majority of his scoring came during a brief purple patch late last year, and his recent form has been less impressive.

Barcelona’s challenges extend beyond their forward line. Defensively, the team has shown vulnerabilities, particularly due to their high defensive line, which opponents have increasingly exploited. Despite these defensive frailties, the club managed to score enough goals last season to secure a domestic treble, highlighting their offensive strength. This season, wingers like Lamine Yamal and Raphinha continue to shine as some of the best in their positions globally. However, the striker slot between these two wide players remains a problematic area. In 2026, whichever forward Flick has chosen to play centrally has struggled to consistently contribute to the team’s attacking build-up.

Ferran Torres, in particular, has found the net only three times in his last 15 appearances across all competitions, and his overall involvement in playmaking has been underwhelming, often losing possession in critical moments. Lewandowski, on the other hand, has scored five goals in his last 18 outings but appears less agile and sometimes fades into the background during matches. Despite these challenges, Lewandowski remains optimistic about the rotation system, emphasizing the physical demands of playing every three days and how sharing minutes can aid recovery and performance. He recently shared in an interview that while he feels tired, he is not completely worn out, suggesting a strategic balance is being sought to prolong his effectiveness.

Barcelona still lead La Liga in terms of goals scored, boasting a total of 67 this season. This scoring prowess is distributed across the squad, with ten different players netting two or more goals. However, no player has surpassed Torres’ tally of 12 goals. This contrasts sharply with Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappe, who, despite battling a persistent knee injury, leads the Spanish league’s scoring charts with 23 goals and tops the Champions League scoring with 13. Flick himself acknowledged Mbappe’s exceptional talent earlier this year, calling him the best striker in the world and praising his consistent goal-scoring ability.

Barcelona currently hold a slender one-point lead in La Liga ahead of Villarreal’s visit, while Real Madrid sits just a point behind and will face Getafe on Monday. Interestingly, Flick has not heavily utilized England international Marcus Rashford as a central striker. The Manchester United loanee has preferred playing from the left wing, but with Raphinha back to full fitness and performing well after an injury layoff, Rashford might reconsider his position to maximize his playing time. Rashford has been a valuable asset this season, contributing more assists than goals, with 13 assists and 10 goals in 34 appearances across all competitions.

Looking ahead, Barcelona will benefit from a relatively quiet schedule over the next two weeks, as other teams participate in the Champions League play-off rounds. Flick believes this break will provide his squad with much-needed rest and preparation time ahead of the challenging fixture against Villarreal. He emphasized the importance of this period for recovery and focus, especially with a demanding run of matches expected every three to four days afterward.

Villarreal, currently trailing Barcelona by 10 points, still harbor hopes of reigniting their title challenge with a surprise victory at Camp Nou. Although their chances have diminished, a win against the league leaders could inject new life into their campaign. Meanwhile, another player to watch this weekend is Pablo Fornals, the former West Ham midfielder now starring for Real Betis. Fornals is enjoying arguably the best season of his career at 30 years old and will be key as Betis prepare to host city rivals Sevilla on Sunday. He scored the opening goal in the first meeting between these sides this season, helping Betis secure a 2-0 away win, and they will be eager to replicate that success at home.
