JUI-F convenes core committee meeting after KP emergency rule

The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) has called a meeting of its Central Core Committee, chaired by Maulana Fazlur Rehman, to review the country’s political situation. The agenda includes Governor’s Rule and emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), and the party will also decide its future course of action.

According to a JUI-F spokesperson, the meeting will begin at 4:00 pm, when the committee will assess the prevailing situation and settle the party’s strategy. Rehman is due to address the media at 5:00 pm after the session.

Presidential proclamation cites terrorism surge in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Governor’s Rule and emergency were enforced in KP to maintain law and order, following approval from President Asif Ali Zardari. The president signed the summary under Articles 232 and 234 of the Constitution, acting on the advice of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

The proclamation cited an extraordinary rise in terrorist incidents and serious security threats. It said attacks on government installations and law enforcement agencies had increased, posing serious risks to public order, and that the provincial government had failed to take adequate measures against terrorism and lawlessness.

Governor’s report alleges provincial government dysfunction

The declaration also refers to a report from the governor, which reportedly highlighted disruptions in the constitutional system. According to the proclamation, the report alleged that the provincial government was not functioning in accordance with the Constitution.

Zardari considered immediate constitutional action necessary, given what the proclamation described as a serious emergency situation in the province.
