The federal cabinet on Sunday recommended imposing an emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, pointing to a decline in law and order and accusing the provincial government of deliberately stepping back from counterterrorism efforts. A statement from the Prime Minister’s Office said the recommendation was made under Articles 232 and 234 of the Constitution.

Led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the cabinet received a security update on the province and reviewed the growing terrorist threat. It then advised the premier to ask President Asif Ali Zardari to use his constitutional powers, given how serious the situation is.
Prime minister’s advice passed to the Presidency
According to the statement, the prime minister’s recommendation has now been forwarded to the Presidency for the president’s consideration.
