Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Asim Munir provided a detailed briefing to a visiting US delegation on the security challenges Pakistan encountered throughout the prolonged Afghan conflict. The meeting took place at the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi.
The delegation, representing the US Afghanistan War Commission and led by Co-Chairs Shamila N Chaudhary and Dr Colin F Jackson, is conducting a comprehensive review of the United States’ two-decade involvement in Afghanistan. During the discussions, Field Marshal Munir emphasized the necessity of including Pakistan’s regional perspective and experiences when evaluating the strategic, diplomatic, and operational aspects of the conflict.
Topics of mutual interest were addressed, including Pakistan’s support during the conflict, the evolving regional security environment, and recent developments in Afghanistan. The delegation acknowledged Pakistan’s significant sacrifices and its ongoing role in promoting peace and stability in the region.
Since the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan in 2021, Pakistan has experienced a notable increase in cross-border terrorist attacks, particularly in the provinces of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. Islamabad has consistently urged the Afghan Taliban to prevent militant groups from using Afghan territory to launch attacks against Pakistani security forces and civilians. However, Pakistan maintains that the Taliban authorities have not taken sufficient measures to curb these hostile activities.
