Lahore police have apprehended a man whose mobile phone contained an audio recording allegedly involving a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) member seeking to recruit 20 to 30 “rioters” for the party’s postponed protest scheduled for September 27.
During a press briefing on Sunday, Lahore’s DIG Operations Faisal Kamran revealed that a woman named Fatima Haider, identified as a member of the PTI Welfare Wing and a suspect in the May 9 cases, was heard in the recording speaking to a man named Amin. She reportedly asked him to arrange people for the upcoming protest.
Kamran claimed the individuals were to be brought to Lahore after receiving training, with the intent to incite unrest similar to the violence witnessed on May 9. Amin, who is from Sahiwal and works as a driver for Fatima Haider’s family, was arrested in connection with the case. Police have formed teams to track down others allegedly involved in the scheme.
Meanwhile, investigations are ongoing to determine the location where the recruits were allegedly trained. The audio recording is set to be examined by the Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA) to verify its authenticity. A formal case has been registered at Defence C Police Station.
Kamran emphasized that peaceful protest is a fundamental right of every citizen, adding that police are committed to protecting both demonstrators and the general public, as well as safeguarding public and private property. He stated that the police disclosed this information to clarify the true intentions behind claims that the planned protest would be peaceful.
In a significant development, Kamran mentioned that another arrest related to the case is anticipated soon.
Separately, the DIG also addressed an ongoing investigation into an alleged gang-rape involving a foreign woman in Lahore’s Defence area. He noted that the victim was unfamiliar with the city’s locations. The case is being jointly handled by the Crime Control Department, Operations, and Investigation wings. Police have seized the vehicle allegedly used in the incident as part of their inquiry.
