Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) has declared it will establish more than 25 protest camps throughout Karachi beginning Saturday. This move is part of an ongoing campaign against the petroleum levy and aims to demand a halt to the city’s extended power outages.
The announcement follows recent developments after JI Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman postponed the next phase of the party’s march on Islamabad. Instead, the party remains stationed in Multan, awaiting a scheduled meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Hafiz Naeem emphasized that the sit-in in Multan will persist until this meeting takes place, reaffirming the party’s commitment to its protest movement.
Addressing the media in Karachi, JI Karachi Emir Munem Zafar highlighted that sit-ins opposing the petroleum levy and excessive taxation are ongoing nationwide. He reiterated the party’s demand for the complete withdrawal of the petroleum levy.
Zafar also criticized K-Electric for the severe power outages in Karachi, noting that the city endures up to 18 hours of load-shedding daily. He described this as a “collective punishment” on consumers due to the failure of some individuals to pay their electricity bills. However, he pointed out that only a small fraction of consumers are defaulters and urged K-Electric to target those specific individuals.
Furthermore, Zafar called on the government to take immediate action to end the prolonged load-shedding in Karachi. He announced that the party would intensify its protest efforts by setting up more than 25 camps across the city starting Saturday and encouraged citizens to actively participate in these demonstrations.
