Italy is set to prohibit face coverings in schools and impose limits on the number of foreign students allowed per class, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced on Sunday. She emphasized these measures during a youth event organized by her right-wing Brothers of Italy party, reinforcing her political stance.
Due to its central location in the Mediterranean, Italy faces significant migrant arrivals, making migration a critical and often divisive issue for its governments. The integration of migrants, especially those from Muslim-majority countries, continues to spark debate within Italian society and politics. Discussions around religious symbols, cultural assimilation, citizenship laws, and immigration policies frequently polarize public opinion.
Meloni revealed that a proposal will soon be presented to the Cabinet to legally establish a maximum number of foreign students per classroom. The plan also includes a requirement for parents of foreign students struggling to integrate to learn Italian. Additionally, the government intends to ban burqas and niqabs in educational institutions.
She explained, “If there is only one child in a class who does not understand Italian, that child can likely learn the language and integrate quickly with the support of classmates and teachers. However, when the number of children who do not understand the language grows large or even becomes the majority, it ceases to be integration and becomes neglect.” Meloni did not disclose the specific limit for foreign students per class.
Currently, non-Italian students make up 11.6 percent of the total student population in Italy, equating to nearly 12 out of every 100 students, research by Fondazione ISMU.
Regarding face coverings, Meloni stated, “Students must attend school with their faces uncovered. In Italy, no one can decide, under the guise of tradition or otherwise, that a young woman must conceal herself.” This announcement marks a significant development in Italy’s approach to cultural integration within its education system.
