Former Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan underwent a thorough medical examination at Adiala jail. A specialized medical team from the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) conducted the check-up, which included assessments of his blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and eyesight.
The medical team was led by Dr. Arif Khan from PIMS, with support from medical personnel at the Adiala jail hospital. Imran Khan, aged 73, has been incarcerated since August 2023 following convictions that he and his party claim are politically motivated.
Since his removal from office in April 2022 through a no-confidence vote, Imran Khan has faced numerous legal challenges, including allegations related to the sale of state gifts and an unlawful marriage case. In a notable development on August 18, the Supreme Court ordered that Imran be transferred to Shifa International Hospital for medical evaluation and treatment. However, citing security concerns, the government instead arranged for his examination at PIMS.
Meanwhile, the PTI has announced plans for a nationwide protest, including a march on Islamabad scheduled for September 27. The party demands the release of its founder and emphasizes the supremacy of the Constitution.
In related political developments, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan expressed support for dialogue with the government, although he noted that negotiations have stalled amid a tense political climate. Speaking from Peshawar, he remarked, “Negotiations should take place, but currently the environment is cold; nothing could be worked out.”
Addressing recent court directives concerning the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police chief, Barrister Gohar criticized the Islamabad High Court’s decision to require an affidavit from the inspector general of police. The court had ruled that provincial governments, including chief ministers, must ensure that government resources are not used to support individuals participating in protests heading toward the federal capital. This verdict came in response to a petition challenging the PTI’s planned march, mandating that no public servant be compelled to join such demonstrations.
