PM Shehbaz Sharif Holds Security Review Amid Rising US-Israel-Iran Tensions

In response to the escalating tensions in the Middle East, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif convened a crucial high-level security meeting in Islamabad on Sunday. The gathering aimed to thoroughly evaluate Pakistan’s security landscape amid the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. This meeting comes at a time when regional dynamics are rapidly shifting, raising concerns about potential spillover effects in South Asia.

The session was attended by key figures including Field Marshal Asim Munir, federal ministers, and senior officials from both civil and military sectors. Their collective expertise was instrumental in conducting a comprehensive review of recent developments, particularly focusing on cross-border incidents between Pakistan and Afghanistan, as well as the broader threats emerging from the volatile regional environment. The discussions underscored the complexity of challenges Pakistan faces on multiple fronts.

Officials highlighted the heightened instability in South Asia following Iran’s retaliatory military campaign, termed “Operation Wa’d-e-Sadiq Four,” which was launched in response to the joint US-Israel offensive known as “Operation Epic Fury.” This tit-for-tat escalation has intensified concerns about security along Pakistan’s western border and beyond. The meeting emphasized Pakistan’s pivotal role in fostering regional peace and stability, especially given its strategic location and historical ties with neighboring countries.

In addition to assessing external threats, the participants reviewed ongoing border security initiatives, including “Operation Ghazab lil-Haq,” which is actively being implemented along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border to curb militant activities and secure the frontier. The government is also focusing on strengthening internal security protocols at sensitive sites across the country to preempt any potential fallout from the regional conflict.

Another critical agenda item was the safety and evacuation plans for Pakistani nationals currently residing in Iran. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs provided updates on efforts to facilitate their safe passage through Azerbaijan, ensuring that citizens are protected amid the deteriorating situation. This humanitarian aspect reflects Pakistan’s commitment to safeguarding its diaspora during times of crisis.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed profound condolences to the Iranian people over the martyrdom of His Eminence Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei. In a heartfelt statement shared on his official social media platform, the premier conveyed Pakistan’s solidarity with Iran during this period of mourning. He also voiced concern over the violation of international law norms resulting from the US-Israel joint attack on Iranian territory, calling for restraint and respect for sovereignty.

“We pray for the departed soul and ask Allah Almighty to grant patience and strength to the Iranian people to endure this irreparable loss,” the Prime Minister remarked, highlighting the deep cultural and diplomatic ties between the two nations. This message of sympathy and support underscores Pakistan’s stance on peaceful coexistence and respect for international norms.

In light of the evolving regional and domestic situation, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has postponed his upcoming official visit to Russia, originally scheduled for the following week. This trip was anticipated to play a significant role in enhancing bilateral relations between Pakistan and Russia. However, the government decided to defer the visit until a more stable environment prevails, with the new dates to be announced after consultations between both countries.

The postponement reflects the government’s prioritization of national security and regional stability over diplomatic engagements during this critical juncture. It also signals Pakistan’s cautious approach amid the unpredictable geopolitical landscape shaped by the US-Israel-Iran conflict.

As the situation continues to develop, Pakistan remains vigilant and committed to maintaining peace within its borders while actively engaging in diplomatic efforts to mitigate regional tensions. The government’s proactive measures demonstrate its resolve to navigate these challenges with prudence and responsibility.
