Alireza Arafi Named to Iran’s Interim Leadership Council Amid Supreme Leader Vacancy

In a significant political development, Iranian cleric Alireza Arafi was officially named on Sunday as the jurist member of Iran’s temporary Leadership Council. This council is tasked with managing the responsibilities of the supreme leader until a permanent successor is selected. The appointment of Arafi ensures the continuity of governance during this crucial transitional period in Iran’s political landscape.

Alireza Arafi, who also holds a position on the influential Guardian Council, will join forces with two other key figures: President Masoud Pezeshkian and Judiciary Chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei. Together, these three leaders will collectively assume the supreme leader’s duties, maintaining stability within the country’s highest echelon of power. This arrangement reflects the constitutional provisions designed to address leadership vacuums.

The formation of this interim council is grounded in Article 111 of Iran’s Constitution, which outlines the procedures to follow upon the death or incapacitation of the supreme leader. Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, the judiciary chief, clarified through a statement on the social media platform X that the council is activated immediately when the supreme leadership position becomes vacant. This mechanism is intended to prevent any power vacuum and ensure the smooth functioning of the state.

The Leadership Council is composed of three members: the sitting president, the head of the judiciary, and a clerical representative from the Guardian Council. Alireza Arafi was chosen to fulfill the clerical role, a decision that highlights his standing within Iran’s religious and political hierarchy. His appointment is crucial as the Assembly of Experts begins its work to identify and appoint a new supreme leader, a process that can be complex and politically sensitive.

This announcement follows the recent confirmation of the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, alongside several senior officials, after reported attacks attributed to Israel and the United States. The sudden loss of such a pivotal figure has sent ripples through Iran’s political system, making the establishment of the interim leadership council an urgent priority. The council’s role will be vital in navigating the country through this period of uncertainty and ensuring that governance continues without disruption.

As Iran faces this critical juncture, the appointment of Alireza Arafi to the interim Leadership Council marks a key step in upholding the constitutional framework and preserving the nation’s political stability. The coming weeks will be closely watched as the Assembly of Experts deliberates on the selection of the next supreme leader, a decision that will shape Iran’s future direction both domestically and internationally.
