Bilawal Proposes Truth Commission to Address Kashmiris’ Grievances

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has urged for Kashmiris to play a more significant role in determining their political future, suggesting the creation of a Truth Commission to address long-standing grievances in Azad Kashmir.

Speaking on the “Hum Dekhen Gey” programme, Bilawal emphasized the seriousness of the Kashmir issue and the need for a peaceful resolution. He proposed that the Truth Commission would investigate all concerns, uncover facts, and offer recommendations grounded in merit.

He explained that the commission should thoroughly examine the challenges faced by Kashmiris and provide a forum for resolving disputes through dialogue. Bilawal further suggested that if this proposal is accepted, protesters should pause their demonstrations until the commission is established.

“I will endeavour to persuade the state to hold off on further actions until the Truth Commission submits its findings,” he stated, highlighting that this mechanism could help resolve conflicts and alleviate the suffering of Kashmiris.

Bilawal stressed that the Kashmir issue extends beyond reserved seats, encompassing broader questions of rights and representation. He insisted that decisions regarding reserved seats, electoral processes, or constitutional amendments should be made by the Kashmiri people themselves.

In addition, he proposed convening a constitutional convention for Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan to explore ways of enhancing rights and governance powers while maintaining the international stance on Kashmir.

Criticizing recent comments by a federal minister about Kashmir’s reserved seats, Bilawal argued that such remarks undermine the perception that Kashmiris are making independent choices. He demanded the minister retract the statements and apologize to the Kashmiri people.

Regarding the upcoming elections in Azad Kashmir, Bilawal expressed the PPP’s desire for a transparent and controversy-free process. He recommended conducting elections in phases to build public confidence in the electoral system.

He also condemned ongoing internet restrictions in Kashmir, noting that communication blackouts hinder political activities and public participation. Bilawal said his party would urge the Election Commission to lift restrictions except in areas facing genuine security threats.

Reiterating the PPP’s commitment to political dialogue and peaceful solutions, Bilawal called on all stakeholders to collaborate in addressing the challenges confronting Kashmir and its people.
