ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday gave approval to significant reforms designed to expedite development projects through public-private partnerships (PPPs) during a high-level meeting held in the federal capital.

He granted in-principle consent to restructure the Public Private Partnership Authority (P3A) and strengthen the overall framework governing these collaborations. This initiative aims to enhance coordination and accelerate the implementation of infrastructure and development projects nationwide.

As part of the overhaul, the P3A will be repositioned under the privatisation division, a strategic move intended to modernize its operations and boost efficiency in project delivery. Officials highlighted that this change will foster a more integrated and responsive system for managing PPPs.

The prime minister also instructed relevant authorities to enhance the capacity of ministries and departments to effectively initiate and oversee projects under the PPP model. He emphasized incorporating performance metrics related to the launch and execution of development schemes via public-private partnerships within government institutions.

Sharif stressed the government’s commitment to making the PPP system more transparent and efficient through the P3A, highlighting the vital role of private sector engagement in promoting economic growth and infrastructure advancement.

During the session, participants reviewed comparative analyses of PPP models implemented in various regional and international contexts. Officials also presented the proposed structural changes aimed at improving oversight and coordination within the new framework.

Under the revised system, the P3A will operate under the supervision of both the Cabinet Committee on Privatisation and the privatisation division, as outlined in the briefing.

The prime minister directed officials to fast-track the implementation of the approved reforms to ensure rapid progress.

The meeting included the presence of several federal ministers, such as Musadik Malik, Azam Nazeer Tarar, Ahsan Iqbal, and Muhammad Aurangzeb, alongside senior officials.
