AOC and Ana Kasparian Debate US Military Aid to Israel on X

A contentious debate unfolded on the social media platform X between Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) and political commentator Ana Kasparian regarding US military assistance to Israel. The confrontation began when AOC shared news about a thwarted assassination attempt against Nerdeen Kiswani, allegedly by a pro-Israel extremist. She condemned the act as a “reprehensible act of political violence” and noted the suspect’s arrest.

Kasparian responded critically, challenging AOC to “vote to send Israel more money for weapons.” AOC denied this accusation, retorting that “those checks don’t cash themselves,” and accused Kasparian of lacking credibility and spreading misinformation.

In reply, Kasparian provided a detailed counterargument, acknowledging AOC’s previous votes against arms funding but criticizing her later decision to vote “present” amid political pressures. Kasparian contended that US-funded military support enables ongoing violence and reminded that such aid is financed by taxpayers.

The exchange intensified when Kasparian’s co-host, Cenk Uygur, joined the discussion. He called for AOC to adopt a stronger stance against Israeli military actions. While recognizing AOC’s past support for the Iron Dome and the IHRA definition of antisemitism, Uygur emphasized that progressive principles demand defending free speech and opposing military aid. He urged AOC to actively resist the “establishment” and champion anti-war efforts.

This online dispute underscores the divisions within progressive circles over US foreign policy toward Israel. It also raises important questions about how elected officials navigate political pressures, advocacy commitments, and accountability to the public.
