PTA to Issue 5G Licenses to Telecom Firms Following Successful Spectrum Auction

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is preparing to officially distribute 5G licenses to telecom operators later this week, marking a significant milestone in the country’s telecommunications sector. This move follows the successful completion of the second phase of the 5G spectrum auction, which has paved the way for the introduction of next-generation mobile services across Pakistan.

officials within the PTA, the licenses will be issued simultaneously to the three telecom companies that emerged as successful bidders during the auction process. This coordinated issuance is designed to ensure a level playing field and facilitate a smooth rollout of 5G technology nationwide. However, before the licenses are formally handed over, each company must fulfill the regulatory requirement of submitting a bank guarantee as a financial assurance.

So far, one of the telecom operators has already completed this step by submitting the necessary bank guarantee. The other two companies are expected to follow suit within the next one to two days, ensuring all prerequisites are met promptly. The terms of the license stipulate that each telecom firm must provide a bank guarantee amounting to $15 million, which serves as a safeguard to uphold the commitments tied to the 5G license.

This development comes on the heels of last week’s successful conclusion of the auction’s second phase, which was a crucial step in the government’s broader strategy to modernize Pakistan’s digital infrastructure. The auction generated a substantial $510 million in revenue, equivalent to approximately Rs142 billion, underscoring the strong market interest and the potential economic benefits of advancing 5G connectivity.

Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, highlighted the importance of this auction, emphasizing that the funds raised will bolster government resources while simultaneously enabling the introduction of cutting-edge mobile services. She expressed optimism that the rollout of 5G will significantly enhance internet speeds and connectivity, benefiting consumers and businesses alike.

Meanwhile, the telecom companies involved have publicly acknowledged the transparency and fairness of the auction process. They have also revealed that they have already initiated preliminary tests of 5G services in select urban areas, signaling their readiness to bring this advanced technology to the public in the near future. These trials are crucial for fine-tuning network performance and ensuring a seamless user experience once 5G is officially launched.

PTA Chairman, retired Major General Hafeez-ur-Rehman, reiterated the significance of the auction’s outcome, noting that the $510 million generated will play a vital role in supporting Pakistan’s telecommunications growth. He also stressed the regulator’s commitment to overseeing a competitive and transparent market environment as the country transitions into the 5G era.

Overall, the imminent issuance of 5G licenses represents a pivotal moment for Pakistan’s telecom industry, promising to accelerate digital transformation and open new avenues for economic development and technological innovation across the nation.
